APPLE VALLEY -- Former AVUSD Superintendent and local business owner, Tom Hoegerman, has donated a toolbox to Apple Valley High School senior Dominick Schlosser in honor of him earning a silver medal at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition in Georgia over the summer. Schlosser earned the medal for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) turning specialist.
Tom Hoegerman, owner of Grey Sage Custom Leather, attached a hand-tooled, leather tag to the toolbox recognizing Dominick’s accomplishments. “It is my honor to give this toolbox to Dominick in support of his machining pathway. It is a small token celebrating the result of his commitment and the countless hours of learning and practicing these skills to compete and place at the national level,” says Hoegerman.
AVUSD officials say that Tom Hoegerman is very involved in the community. Hogerman says he “hope[s] this inspires more students to participate in the Career Technical Education programs, and for our local industries and manufacturers to support our students who excel in the trades and engineering.”
“Going to the competition in Atlanta was a great experience and I am so grateful for all of the people that helped me get there. I’m so lucky to have access to opportunities like this through school,” Dominick said.
William Hoegerman, the AVEX Engineering and Manufacturing Pathway instructor at AVHS and son of Tom Hoegerman, says that he hopes that Dominick’s mindset inspires others in the community to also look to the future, build, improve, and inspire.

Dominick says that “The donations from Mr. Hoegerman [is] very kind and it means a lot to me to know that people are supporting me and the other students who compete.” His plans for this upcoming year are to train students, carry on his legacy of dedication, and establish a dynasty at the state and national level for CNC machining competitions. As a senior this school year, Dominick plans to reinvigorate the AVEX program's excitement around machining and manufacturing with new projects and possibilities, while also earning the industry certifications that he has put hundreds of hours into training for.
Tom Hogerman served as an educator in VUSD for 30 years. During that time he was the superintendent from 2010-2019.
