Waterjet USA LLC, Geneva, Ill., has installed a 5-axis, 3D waterjet cutting machine at Front Street Shipyard, a custom boat builder, boatyard, marina, and service yard in Belfast, Maine. The Suprema DX 1340 is the largest ever built and installed in the U.S. by Waterjet USA, and it took about two weeks to assemble.

The machine has a 50-ft. table and lathe attachment and can cut stainless steel, titanium, and other materials with an accuracy of 0.002 in. The lathe attachment is designed for tubular indexing or turning applications.

While the shipyard will use the waterjet system for in-house work on commercial and recreational vessel retrofits, it plans to use the machine to cut custom specialty parts for manufacturers worldwide.
