1977- If only they had told the truth.

Instead, they chose a future of dust, mud and fire. www.scientificamerican.com/...

“It’s never been remotely plausible that they did not understand the science,” says Naomi Oreskes, a history of science professor at Harvard University.

Exxon knew about Climate Change almost 40 years ago.

Exxon was aware of climate change, as early as 1977, 11 years before it became a public issue, according to a recent investigation from InsideClimate News. This knowledge did not prevent the company (now ExxonMobil and the world’s largest oil and gas company) from spending decades refusing to publicly acknowledge climate change and even promoting climate misinformation

I know this is old news, but it needs to be repeated and falls into my current thoughts of corruption and the fall of democracy.

This recent article shows why

Revealed: oil sector’s ‘staggering’ $3bn-a-day profits for last 50 years www.theguardian.com/…

The oil and gas industry has delivered $2.8bn (£2.3bn) a day in pure profit for the last 50 years, a new analysis has revealed.

The vast total captured by petrostates and fossil fuel companies since 1970 is $52tn, providing the power to “buy every politician, every system” and delay action on the climate crisis, says Prof Aviel Verbruggen, the author of the analysis. The huge profits were inflated by cartels of countries artificially restricting supply.

The analysis, based on World Bank data, assesses the “rent” secured by global oil and gas sales, which is the economic term for the unearned profit produced after the total cost of production has been deducted.

The result of which is we are 45 years behind the curve.

The BBC has a good new documentary series entitled Big Oil v The World hopefully this will be broadcast in the US.www.theguardian.com/...

This shocking documentary series reveals the lies oil lobbyists told to undercut democracy, prevent action against global heating – and bring our planet to the brink

May Robert Byrd and Chuck Hagel rot in hell. en.wikipedia.org/...

The bitter irony, clinched by one of the company’s former climate scientists, Ed Garvey, was that Exxon could have been part of the solution rather than the problem. Garvey worked on Exxon’s carbon dioxide research programme from 1978 to 1983, when it was closed because falling gas prices made it seem an expendable luxury.

Going back to my original link:

James Black delivered a sobering message on the topic. “In the first place, there is general scientific agreement that the most likely manner in which mankind is influencing the global climate is through carbon dioxide release from the burning of fossil fuels," Black told Exxon’s management committee

Instead, they used uncertainty and lies as the way forward.

They could have started a new industrial revolution.

They knowingly chose corruption for short term gain.

They should be made to repay all their profits of the last 45 years to repair the damage they have deliberately caused. Blood is on their hands.

[*Note: all the bolding mine]

It is important we remember the historical facts to avoid the repeating of similar corruption.

Being a leftist is boring, conservatives just radically reinvent themselves without the need for real data, so much for conservatives, I think I’ll self cancel from using that word.
